5-a Day-Power Play Campaign

 

5 a Day-Power Play! is a program of the California Department of Health Services, administered by the Public Health Institute and funded by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture. 5 a Day encourages 9-11 year-old children to "power up" and eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day for better health as a part of a high fiber, lowfat diet and a physically active lifestyle.

5 a Day-Power Play! reaches children through six community channels:

  • Schools
  • Community youth organizations
  • Farmer's markets
  • Supermarkets
  • Food Service / restaurants
  • Media

5 a Day-Power Play! Materials:

Our materials target elementary schools and community youth organizations that serve low income 9-11- year old children. Materials are free to qualifying low income schools and organizations.

Teacher's Box :

  • The School Idea & Resource Kit -- A teacher's guide filled with 17 fun fruit & vegetable activities that can be incorporated into subjects across the curriculum
  • Kids...Get Cookin'! Cookbooks. This full-color, bilingual cookbook for kids features delicious fruit & vegetable recipes with celebrity photos and colorful graphics. Each child receives his/her own cookbook after participating in the Campaign!
  • Parent Brochures - English/Spanish brochures to help you send the 5 a Day-Power Play! Campaign message home
  • Challenge Booklets - English/Spanish booklets to introduce children to the Food Guide Pyramid, and to challenge them to eat 5 a Day!

Community Youth Kit:

  • The Community Youth Organization Idea & Resource Kit -- A youth leader's guide that includes activities related to after school and community youth programs.
  • 1 Cassette Tape of the 5-a-day Rap which combines music that appeals to kids with a positive. healthy message
  • Plus much more!

5 a Day Kids...Get Cookin' CookbooksCommunity Youth Kit:

  • The Kids...Get Cookin' Cookbooks feature 20 great recipes in both English and Spanish
