Fun, Free, Easy to Use Nutrition Education Materials

Activities That Meet The California Content Standards

The University of California Cooperative Extension is offering a free nutrition education program to Tulare County schools and other youth organizations and groups. Through this program, thousands of local children will participate in hands-on nutrition education.

Funding for the School Nutrition Education Program is provided by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program. The School Nutrition Education Program receives funds from this grant by calculating teacher salaries and time spent preparing and implementing the various nutrition curricula.

Our program staff can offer curriculum and teaching materials to teachers and area educators at no cost. We also provide free training, workshops and demonstrations for teachers and their students. The School Nutrition Education Program offers the following curriculum

The School Nutrition Education Program has the following goals:

  • To encourage children to make healthy food choices.
  • To help children develop good health and nutrition habits.
  • To promote reading and listening skills for 5-9 year olds.
  • To help children enjoy fruits and vegetables.
  • To change the nutrition and fitness behaviors of middle school youth.

Research has found a clear connection between nutrition and learning. The findings show that children and youth will be ready to learn and will achieve their fullest potential only if they are well nourished and healthy. Such children have better attendance at school, concentrate more on their lessons, and achieve improved performance.

To be eligible to receive free materials & training, schools must have 50% or more free or reduced price meals. Community youth organizations that serve low-income children may also qualify.
